Dr Muhammed Majeed

Dr. Muhammed Majeed, founder of SAMI/Sabinsa Group of Companies, was born and raised in Kerala, India. He has been a visionary with zeal and commitment all along. It was his urge to establish himself not just as a scientist but also an entrepreneur that made him fly beyond his home turf. In 1975, after obtaining a degree in pharmacy, he came to the United States, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Industrial Pharmacy from Long Island University, New York, and soon he completed doctoral degree in the same field from St John’s University, New York.

Dr. Majeed established Sabinsa Corporation in the state of New Jersey, USA with the objective of importing and marketing generic drugs into the US for the drug molecules coming off patents. Dr. Majeed rightly anticipated and assessed the undeveloped market opportunity that existed in providing Ayurveda-based products to the developed world. “The vision of a research scientist takes on social and commercial expressions.”
Dr. Majeed was a pioneer in introducing to the US market a new line of products based on Indian herbal plants, the value of Ayurveda, and this ancient Indian system of medicine that could act as a complete curative to various ailments that affect humanity. The persistent efforts made by Dr. Majeed in the early 90’s in the field of Ayurveda did reap benefits among the Americans. They started recognizing the potential of Ayurveda which was soon considered as Alternative medicine. By 2000 it became popularly accepted as Complementary medicine and now it is part of the Integrated medicine. To facilitate the increased demand for innovative application-based products, Sami Labs Limited (formerly known as Sami Chemicals & Extracts Limited) was set up in 1991 at Singasandra in Bangalore, India, as a research and development facility. The facility now has over 500 talented and committed staff working for the company. Sami Labs combines manufacturing and global marketing of nutraceuticals and fine chemicals with cutting edge research. Although the transition from a researcher to heading a marketing company was a tremendous challenge, Dr. Majeed handled it successfully. Sabinsa Corporation, the research oriented pharmaceutical and nutraceutical marketing company’s main thrust and focus is to research and innovate new products. Sabinsa’s mission is to provide alternative and complementary natural products for human nutrition and wellbeing. Sabinsa has brought to market more than 100 standardized botanical extracts, and privately funded clinical studies in conjunction with prestigious institutions in support of these products.

And, the short courses, or the other degrees/certificates earned by him, and the awards won, or the feats attained by him, during his service as a Colonel-rank officer in Military Engineering Services i.e. MES, are not part of the above list. They are separate. He has not only 21 Post-Graduate Degrees to his credit, but also 14 degrees of Graduate level. It deserves mention that to be a top-notch bureaucrat i.e. an IAS or IPS officer, one has to have only Graduate Degree, and to be eligible to get the job of an expert or Professor in a University, one has to have one PG Degree. But, to have 35 degrees in his kitty, is not a child's play, especially from a person, whose parents have been uneducated, and who has to face the ire of his parents for daring to go to the college.

Having rural background, and very humble economic condition, the superhero in Dr. HS Sainbhy earned degree after degree to be first the maximum degrees holder in the district, then in the state of Punjab, then his country India, and then the World. He conquered the world of degrees by dint of his sheer diligence, consistent focus and daring attitude. He not only succeeded in adding so many educational feathers to his turban (nay cap), but also earned the livelihood by becoming a Colonel-rank officer in Military Engineering Service. He literally rose from rags to riches, and attained degrees, status and a rank. Today, he is living a happy retired life with his children and grandchildren. His daughter Dr. HK Dolly is a professor in a college, while his elder, middle and younger sons are HS Dimple, a PCS (A) officer, Dr HS Darling, a DM (Oncology) i.e. a super-specialist in the field of Cancer disease, and Adv MS Dazzling an Advocate respectively.

    TP Visalakshi

T.P. Visalakshi won the first rank for MA Economics in the first batch of Calicut University. Folklore Studies fetches T.P. Visalakshi her second MA rank at the age of 69.

She won the first rank for MA Economics in the first batch of Calicut University. Nearly 50 years and a college professor’s career later, she won the first rank for MA Folklore Studies offered by the same university this year. At 69, T.P. Visalakshi says she is still young. “I will be a student on the campus when Calicut University celebrates its golden jubilee in three years,” she said. She was acknowledging a reception she got at the School of Folklore Studies, Calicut University, on Monday.

The first rank she won in folklore studies, 14 years after her retirement from Zamorin’s Guruvayurappan College, Kozhikode, as head of the Department of Economics, has wowed many on the campus. Her teachers, most of them her children’s age, showered her with praise.

“We were blessed to have a student our mother’s age,” said faculty members Soman Katalur and Aravindakshan. Head of the School of Folklore Studies E.K. Govinda Varma Raja was quick to join the paean: “Her arrival brought lots of positive changes to the department. She was an ideal student showing the way for today’s generation,” he said. Dr. Soman said that Ms. Visalakshi, who came from a non-semester age, stood as a smooth link between the old and the modern student regimes. She respected her teachers, though all of them were much younger to her. Ms. Visalakshi was arguably the first student to join a regular programme at Calicut University in her late sixties. “I chose folklore because that gives me the answer to the problems posed by today’s globalisation,” she said. After retiring in 2001, she learned clinical psychology and counselling, among other things. “I love to keep myself busy always,” she said. She is learning astrology as well. But she has a purpose. “I am studying astrology to learn why I chose folklore much late in my life,” she said.
